Update: Goal #12: Photography Class
I have finally taken the leap and am currently taking a seven week beginner's Photography course in Film Photography.   Although I love the ease of digital photography, to me, nothing beats film.  I am attending the Educational Alliance School in New York City.

I feel this is the best school for me for some reason.  I have been saying for years how I have been wanting to go, ready to go but never went.  I think I have been waiting to find this specific school.

I started a week ago and I am very happy with my school, class and teacher.  I am learning darkroom and printing my own black and white prints.  There is nothing like dropping a piece of photo paper into a pan of chemicals and watching your image come to life.  It is so amazing that I don’t think I can put the feeling into words.

The school offers various art related classes at very reasonable prices.  The staff is friendly and knowledgeable.  When I attended my first class I saw a table with ceramic bowls created by the students.  The beauty of it took my breath away and made me want to create something with my hands.

I have decided to take the next class after this beginner’s class.  The second class teaches you how to make museum style prints.  I find this very intriguing.

But before I get ahead of myself I need become stronger in  dark room and printing.  I want to know my way around it unassisted.

I am happy because I feel I am on the good path.

GOAL COMPLETED: #6. Pay Taxes Annually
I started my business two years ago and have been paying my taxes annually.  I am always worried about the tax man given the recession and because it seems everyone is going to jail or getting his with fines regarding their taxes.

I do not want this to be me so I call each year to make sure the rules havent' changed.  I also try to keep my business as simple as possible.

So far things are working out and I am pleased.

GOAL UPDATE: Travel to Four New Places Per Year -2 out of 4 Completed
Thursday, October 2, 2008
This year I have traveled to two new places.  My first trip was to see my father in Florida and the second trip was this past weekend to Washington DC.

I had a wonderful time in the Washington DC area.  I spent a night in a very comfort Inn and had a meal that reminded me of home.  I didn't take any pictures this time around but plan to visit again very soon.

I have two more trips I want to make before the year ends.  The first one is to Philadelphia and the second would be an international trip.  I have a travel credit for a bus to Philadelphia and I am going to find a way to take a 2-3 day international trip.

Double Header-Goals Completed: # 48 Visit Gene (My Dad) and # 79 Take my first air plane trip
Sunday, April 27, 2008
The first week of April I took my first airplane trip to Boca Raton, Florida to visit my father. It was a great experience and I accomplished my life long goal of flying for the first time.

I have always been afraid of heights and planes but decided when I turned thirty that I would step out of my zone and try something new. As luck would have it situations help propel my decision to see more of the world. I obtained a passport and I made the trip to and from Florida without any problems.

My initial fears dissolved once I was airborne. Most people think the initial takeoff and landing are the scary parts. For me it's sitting on the run way. I feel boxed in. I love take off and feel like I am indeed flying. I like the speed of landing. The one thing I might never get use to is turbulence.

I was lucky on my first trip because I met my pilot and was seated next to a very friendly flight attendant. The trip from JFK to Florida was a short one-three hours.

When I booked my flight I thought I would be afraid to look out the window so I booked aisle seats. Big mistake because the photographer in me had to see. I had to see what the world looked like from above. The glimpses that I saw took my breath away and made me change my seats to a window seat on the return.

On my return I was blessed with the opportunity to watch the sun set over Florida as we departed. It was one of the most beautiful things I have experienced in my life to date. The only thing was that I didn't know I could use my camera on the plane after we cleared but I figure I do the photo thing with my next trip.

The trip went great. My dad was very happy to see me and I was able to see the home, life and friendship he has down in Florida. I was very happy to see he has such a balanced life that has limited stresses.

I found Florida to be beautiful and was sad to only have a day or two to take it in. I didn't take many photos because I was in awe. I plan to take another solo trip as soon as possible.

Goal Completed: 20. Set up a website showcasing my work and take on paid jobs
I have created an online portfolio to showcase my work. In a previous entry I told you about Carbonmade and my experience with them. I have adjusted my portfolio and as a result I had two new gigs.

I am happy that I accomplished this goal because it means I am being active with my art. I have been taking a lot more photos and adjusting my web site accordingly to try and showcase my best work.

Updated: Do one gig in each type of photography I am interested
I have done two new types of photo gigs since I last wrote an entry. I did a maternity photo shoot and a baby shower. It was my first time doing both and I had a great time.

The maternity shoot went very well. I was very nervous but since I knew the family I became more comfortable as the shoot went on. My friend Deb and her family are expecting a baby girl and the photo shoot wardrobe was designed in pink.
After arriving at their beautiful home I was shown the lay of the land by their daughter. When she showed me her room I knew this is where the shots would be taken.

I wanted to not only capture the mother in all her beauty but also her husband and young daughter as a family and individually. I felt that the birth of new child affects the entire family and that each of them had different emotions that could be captured.

I haven't mastered indoor lighting or flash yet but the children's room had a beautiful window that let in lots of natural light and I was able to capture some of the following images:

The baby shower was for the family I did the maternity shoot for. It was an evening filled with family, friends, food, dancing, laughter, fun, and love. I learned a lot about family not just photography from doing the baby shower.

I met a lot of wonderful people doing both shoots. As I watched the evening progress I learned how families celebrate and how two families become one.
Trying a new type of photography has helped me build more confidence in my work as well as help steer me towards figuring out which style I like the best.

Taxes
I paid my personal and small business taxes in February and was pleased to find out that I can do them together. Since I am a single person LLC I can file my taxes annually along side my person taxes.

I have an excellent tax preparer and he even helped me get set up with spreadsheets to help track my expenses and payments throughout the year so that next year things will be a bit more organized.
